Hey Mommy! You have now entered your third trimester. Congratulations! 2/3 of you pregnancy is behind you. I hope you are handling your pregnancy well. I guess you can’t wait to hold your precious baby in your arms. Hang in there. The moment is very close.
This week your baby is almost 2 pounds and measures 14, 5 inches (875 grams and 36,5 cm in length). He or she is about the size of a cauliflower head. The baby’s head is almost 7 cm in diameter (over 2,5 inches).
As your baby is approaching the size he/she will have at birth, the chances for survival if you enter early labor increases. At this point your baby’s chance of survival is at 80%. With the right care, a premature baby at 27 weeks can easily survive. The lungs are not fully developed yet, but with the right assistance they can function properly. However, further complications are not excluded.
The retina at the back of your baby’s eyes is beginning to develop so he or she might start to open the eyes. Moreover, the baby might even make the difference between night and day. Just for fun, if you put a bright light on your tummy, your baby may turn if he/she faces it.
The brain is in its final stages of development. With this in mind, imagine that your baby can now process taste, as his/her taste buds are developing. So, if you are eating something spicy, your baby will know and may start hiccuping, which you will feel by the way. You will feel every hiccup, burp and shuddering. It won’t last too long though.
Your baby now looks much like he/she will look at birth. Eyelashes, eyebrows, hair and muscle tone, they all start to look normal. Not to mention that the baby is now more plump as the fat is beginning to deposit.
As for you, you may experience new symptoms as the body prepares for the birth. You will have an increased appetite, which is normal considering that your body uses a lot of energy. BUT, don’t overdo it. You don’t have to eat for two. I said in a previous post that the body only needs 200 extra calories when you are pregnant, so don’t use this as an opportunity to eat everything that is in front of you. It’s important that you eat healthy and remain active. Remember, a healthy mom means a healthy baby.
Speaking of pregnancy symptoms, the third trimester is the time for the embarrassing ones such as piles, wind and leaky boobs. Don’t worry, not one of them is a long term symptom. Your body is now under a large amount of pressure (also in the literal sense ) so you don’t have to make excuses.
You should start trying some breathing exercises, some pregnancy yoga or whatever activity which includes such exercises. They will be extremely useful on your ‘D’ day.
I believe that it is time to decide a birthing plan and a birthing partner. If you have friends who have gone through this, you should ask them some advice. Nobody will be able to tell you better, not the internet (myself included), not books or any other source of information. Real experiences have the bigger value when it comes to this, so listen to them carefully.
Until next week, you should have a 27 week ultrasound. You entered a new trimester so you may want to check things up. Also, it’s an opportunity to see your baby and listen to his or her heart beat. I guarantee it will be soothing for you.
