At 25 weeks your baby measures 13, 5 inches (34 cm) and weighs 1 and a half pounds (690 grams). It’s getting harder to compare your baby to fruits now as he/she is getting bigger. Proportion wise, your baby is pretty well built, considering that there is not much body fat and the skin is really thin. Other than that, your baby pretty much looks like a newborn.
Bones are solidifying by the week and your baby’s hands are now fully developed, even though there are some nerve connections which still need some work, having a long way to go. But dexterity is improving, your baby explores himself/herself by touching the face, legs, and pretty much everything within reach. If you are, by any chance, having twins, they will start explore each other. This is a very good thing as they begin their bonding. They become more aware that they are sharing the womb.
The brain is also growing and brain cells are starting to mature. The structure of the spine begins to form. There are 33 rings, 150 joints and 1000 ligaments. They all start to form now, which is pretty amazing if you ask me.
Swallowing reflexes are also starting to develop. Blood vessels from the lungs develop and if your baby had closed-up nostrils until now, this changes, they begin to open.
Needless to say, your baby’s sexual organs are fully developed. I suppose you all know the baby’s sex by now, with the exception of all of you who don’t want to know until delivery.
It’s not something new that you baby can hear your voice from inside the womb, but as the inner ear’s bones harden, hearing is more acute. What is more amazing is that the baby can now learn and remember the voices he/she hears. So basically, from now on, every time your baby will hear your voice, or your partner’s voice, she/he will be able to recognize and respond to it. How amazing is that? You can take advantage of that. Talk, sing and read to your baby. It won’t be for nothing.
Just as a simple reminder, babies born at 25 weeks have a 50 % chance of survival.
Leaving all technicalities behind, let’s talk about you for a second. I mustn’t tell you that you have a belly as big as a soccer ball, I suppose you feel it for yourself. How is that balance going?
At 25 weeks you should be having an antenatal appointment. Have a 25 week ultrasound, see your baby. Also, talk to your midwife about a birth plan. There are women who consider it very important and, no matter what, they want to stick to it. Talk about types of delivery, whether you want a water birth or natural. Stuff like that. She will give all the options available and you will have to choose the one you think is best suited for you. You should think about pain relief and birth positions.
There are women who don’t even want to hear about drugs while giving birth. I honestly can’t imagine why. All options are safe, don’t harm the baby. It will make your delivery so much easier. Don’t say no until you have made a thorough research on every available option. Don’t listen to myths and sayings. But then again it’s your body. You will do as you will see fit.
While having your antenatal appointment, make sure to be tested for gestational diabetes. So, if you gained weight rapidly or if your urine/blood sample has flagged cause for concern, you should see exactly what is going on.
How is the baby prep going? This week you could think about buying a car seat for when you arrive from the hospital. I am sure that you already thought about everything, but the important thing is to get all this stuff sorted out as soon as possible. Don’t postpone things for no reason. There will be a moment in the near future when you will not be able to solve these small issues. The early bird gets the worm.
